INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT KPOP IDOLS AND KOREAN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Idol Is A ‘Well-Paying’ Job But It Won’t Last Long And The Artists Have To Trade Many Things In Their Younger Years.
In early 2019, the Korean public was amazed by the huge wealth of IU and Yoon Ah. IU purchased a plot of land near the GTX high-speed metro line project in the suburbs of Gyeonggi Province. The land has skyrocketed from 4.6 billion won to 6.9 billion won, helping the singer earn 2.3 billion won. Yoon Ah also bought a building that costs 10 billion won in Cheongdam-dong, the most expensive area in Seoul.

IU and Yoon Ah shocked people for owning expensive real estate.
Netizens think that the idols are making too much money. Celebrities are buying most of the most expensive areas in Seoul, they even raise the price higher than the actual price. A part of Korean people is angry because of the rich and poor gap between artists and ordinary workers. Singers and actors are living too easily, doing just little but having an unbelievably high income. Many idols who are just over 20 or 30 years old have owned many real estate, with remarkable fortune. So is idol really an easy job with a high salary as many people imagine? Is the artist’s income too much compared to the effort they took?

IDOLS’ JOB MUST HAVE INVESTMENT AND RISK
Idols start practicing in their teenage years. Ever since they were in middle high school, they spent time in dance centers, preparing for the auditions for entertainment companies. The members of EXO, BTS, Wanna One, Twice, Black Pink, Red Velvet… all spent their youth in the practice rooms and underwent stressful tests. While other students enjoy spending time with their friends and family, having romantic relationships, trainees locked themselves in the practice room, the only places they went to were their home and their company. Minzy (2NE1) said that she felt lost because she couldn’t go to school regularly, she only talked with other members or the employees in the company, making it difficult for her to adapt to the life outside YG.

Ever since entering the company, the trainees have signed a contract that gave them a huge debt. It is the investment for courses, dormitory, and managers. The family and the trainees themselves are accepting a significant debt without knowing whether or not they are successful enough to pay. There are many idols who have to work for years without getting paid because they have to pay for their training fees. Many places also take advantage of contract terms to make female artists promote with erotic images, revealing clothes and disturbing dancing in the events.

The future of idol career is insecure unless you can join big companies that ensure your success like SM, JYP and YG. More and more teenagers are dreaming of being an idol but this is also a profession that requires serious and risky investment.

THE WORK IS ALWAYS SCRUTINIZED AND RECEIVED TONS OF CRITICISM
If you are sensitive with criticism and discomfort when being judged on the outside, being an idol is definitely not the right job for you. The idols are always scrutinized about talents, looks, and actions, words in every situation. Most idols have beautiful visual but in the eyes of Korean netizens, only a small defect also becomes the subject of jokes and discrimination. Cha Eun Woo (Astro) burst into tears in the concert revealing a lot of acne-prone skin. Wendy (Red Velvet) pursues an anti-scientific diet to avoid being chubby. Minzy (2NE1) is psychologically affected by being badly criticized by Daddy Yang and netizens … Only a bad photo and a sloppy image will be enough to make the idol receive hundreds, thousands of hate comments, putting great pressure on them.

Cha Eun Woo revealed his face with acne at the event.

Wendy lost weight to the point of being skinny.
Korea is a country that focuses on codes of politeness, especially among seniors – juniors. Just a mistake like standing in the wrong position or an unfriendly gaze will be enough to make a person become a center of criticism. Idols are watched everywhere from the stage, at the airport or even while sitting backstage. Many groups, idols are troubled because they do not enthusiastically support the artists who are performing on stage. The idols have to get used to the camera lens all the time, ready to be bashed for the slightest mistakes. Netizen is only interested in scandals but rarely pay attention to the main postings.

SNSD members have been criticized for their lack of enthusiasm for interviews.

Immediately after falling in love, idols were also watched and protested. Dispatch paparazzi are ready to follow the idol everywhere, trying to figure out how to photograph the idols. For idol careers, dating will only damage the career, causing a segment of fans to turn their back on them. Seol Hyun, Jennie are girls who receive countless criticism when revealing dating information. Hyun Ah and E’Dawn were even kicked out of the company. Love stories between stars are always watched and scrutinized and most couples break up because they are too busy or are put under pressure from fans and management companies.

Jennie received much sarcasm when she revealed dating information with Kai.
The image of Seol Hyun sneaking to Zico's house to date has been mocked by netizens.

Anyone can be depressed, regardless of career. In Korea, artists are particularly vulnerable to psychological illnesses due to pressure from the public and from success. Jong Hyun (SHINee) suicide was a big shock to K-pop. After the departure of male and female singers like Minzy and Lee Hi, Woo Young revealed that he was also depressed and understood Jong Hyun’s thoughts. These shares are alarm bells for fans and netizens. The public should have a sympathetic look, reduce harsh comments, stop offending artists and hide behind social networking accounts while being insensitive to the pain of others.

The departure of Jong Hyun shocked the public.
The Career Has A Short Lifespan And A Tight Schedule

The age of the K-pop group is 7 years and that is usually only for successful, popular groups. Idol debut at the age of 20 and worked hard for a few years before being replaced by more youthful juniors. When the group starts to gain popularity, the idol will be exhausted in tight schedules like promoting, closing ads, recording shows, filming movies. Artists devote the most glorious years of their career to earn enough income for the remaining years. To have huge amounts of money, artists must sacrifice their personal and healthy lives. And to make sure that when they are no longer active, idols still have a comfortable and stable life, most of them choose to invest in real estate, open restaurants, and cafes.

During the MAMA awards ceremony, Jin (BTS) revealed shocking information that the group nearly disband because of both mental and physical pressures when it was too successful and had many schedules. Jeong Yeon (Twice) also opened her heart about the difficult time. Twice is almost active all year, with no rest time. The singer cried because she felt sorry for not being able to show 100% in front of fans. At the end of 2018, Tzuyu, Mina, Momo missed some events because of exhaustion.

BTS’s tears and sharing at MAMA 2019 touched their colleagues and fans.
Throughout the age of 20, idols only know how to work and rarely have time for themselves. When it comes to the slope of the career, many stars enjoy the available assets. That is the result of years of work to exhaustion.

Suzy was born in 1994 but has been among the highest-paid stars in Kbiz.

G-Dragon is one of the richest stars in Kbiz, owning many expensive cars and watches.
If you look at the wealth of properties, apartments, brands, and expensive tours of Kpop stars, many people will think that this is the most desirable job. In fact, only those who accept to trade the youth, try their best, have enough talent and lucky enough can become a star. Idols are a “high-paying” job but short-lived and artists must chase things out of the most brilliant youth.

The Burning Sun scandal, also known as the Burning Sun gate, is a 2019 entertainment and sex scandal in Seoul, South Korea which involved several celebrities, including Korean idols of popular K-pop groups, and police officials. It surprised a lot of kpop fans because it's such a big issues back then. Systemic corruption has allowed the country’s ruling class to act above the law and women are paying the price.

Moon ordered investigations not just into Burning Sun, but into the police force, due to accusations of cover-ups at the club and others in the Gangnam and Hongdae districts, and also into alleged crimes committed by Kim Hak-eui in 2009 and Jang Ja-yeon’s death the same year.

Kim Hak-eui resigned from his role of vice justice minister in 2013 after video emerged of him allegedly raping a woman at a sex party at the home of businessman Yoon Jung-cheon five years earlier. The case was investigated twice in 2013 and 2014 but was thrown out despite the video, with prosecutors arguing that Kim could not be identified. An independent panel under the Ministry of Justice has concluded the original investigations were flawed and Kim has now been indicted on charges of receiving 170 million won ($143,700) and sexual favors in bribes from a construction contractor. The investigation did not confirm the rape allegation.

The tragic case of actress Jang Ja-yeon, who said she had been forced into sex by her agency, has also been reviewed. Jang, who starred in the K-drama TV hit Boys over Flowers, killed herself in 2009, leaving a seven-page note identifying 20 of the men allegedly involved, including influential figures in the entertainment and media industry. Favorite Soloist
There have been a lot of changes since last year’s census results for the soloists. For the first time ever, Chungha has taken the first place for favorite solo artist on r/kpop. Last year she was at 4th place. Taeyeon has gone from 2nd place to 4th place. Sunmi climbed from 7th place to 3rd place. Taemin has climbed from 9th place to 5th place.

Some of the new additions to the top 10 soloists are Heize, who climbed from last year’s 11th place to 9th place. RM went from last year’s 17th place up to 10th place.G-Dragon has dropped out of the top 10 favorite soloists, he previously had the 6th place, now he has the 13th place. The biggest drop was Zico, who was 10th place last year and dropped to 23rd place.

Hyuna, interestingly enough, hasn’t released any music since she was part of Triple H’s Retro Future in June of last year. She is the only soloist in the top 10 to have not released any music since the last census.

BLACKPINK INTERACTION 2019 WITH WESTERNER ARTISTS

BLACK PINK’s intention of entering the American market was a debatable topic among K-Pop fans. The reason was that many K-Pop seniors of them have failed to gain the entrance to this harsh market. The main problem being the difference in culture, beauty definition, music taste, and racism. Even BLACK PINK’s fandom, BLINK, was worried for the girls’ future when YG didn’t let go of the “American dream”.  Blackpink's performance at Coachella last year has left a good impression on American fans. BLACK PINK brought fire to the stage and paid attention to stir up the audience’s emotion. In addition, the performance with the live band also gives a different feel than the group’s previous stages.

When BTS came over to promote, a lot of people did think they met the hype ARMY gave them, which attributed to a lot of their success. That and the fact that their fanbase had time to grow with them and was very dense by the time they came to North America. BlackPink is the opposite. So having some support for another famous western artists would help blackpink to get more US audience.

Some famous names like Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, DJ Snake, Khalid, Ariana Grande, etc. couldn’t hide their excitement for BLACK PINK and went to the concert or followed the group on Instagram. So many western artists has given their interest toward Blackpink members. Here are several interaction of Blackpink member with some westerner stars:

1. Rihanna and jennie

2. Dua lipa and jisoo & lisa

3. Ezra miller and rose

4. Rose, Jisoo and Selena gomez

IS YG and all their Artists inside DAMNED NOW?

YG's management has been grumbled about for a while now, but I couldn't find a proper thread where the management style and how abusive it is toward the artists/fans is discussed. I really think something is severely broken at YG and Blackpink's album scrap and Jennie's solo is pretty much a canary in a bird cage.

According to the netizen, YG Entertainment was included in the top 3 entertainment companies thanks to BIGBANG and G-Dragon, but now that most of the members have been enlisted in the army, that is no longer the case. It's a horrible fall for YG, a company who once was at the top spot in the industry, winning over SM Entertainment in its market capitalization. YG, had been in bad shape coz it couldn't keep up with sustaining revenue without Big Bang actively promoting. Seungri's scandal widened the gap copared to its competitors. As of 28th, the market capitalization of SM is 1,177.7 billion won, while JYP is @ 1,087 billion won. YG's post is about 300 billion won less (around 700+ billion won). It is shameful to still consider them to be a part of the Big 3.

YG is mismanaging Blackpink to the ground. I literally was only tided over from two years of eight songs because YG promised the first album of two years in November, with a full comeback schedule and multiple singles/music videos. That's literally asking for the bare minimum from fans. Even Western musicians are having more comebacks and they're notorious for the 2 year album cycle. The Dua Lipa song should have been their huge break into the west, but it only did kind of ok. I wasn't interested in that Dua Lipa song, which should've been the song that broke BP mainstream, because it sounded rushed with no video. Hell G-IDLE is getting huge opportunities like working with League of Legends and the extremely problematic but known (i guess) Madison Beer, which had a video that went to the front page of Reddit with 30k+ upvotes. What has BP been doing besides staying in the dungeon?

For BLACKPINK, his promotion strategy is really good in public eye, I’ll admit. Since they only release one or two songs per album on average, they only have six? five? music videos so far, and this is why everyone eats up their live performances and dance practices - because there isn’t much content from them. However, the number of songs they have per album is just sad to think about. They’ve been a debuted group for three years now. They only now have enough songs to fill up a regular album.

Ultimately, there's something just off about Jennie/BP's vibe now in my mind that I can't shake. I think everyone collectively feels like this but can't express it well, if that makes sense, if you look at all the comments that just seem nervous or anxious. This is the weirdest thing that's happened in kpop to me in the ten years on/off I've been listening. To see a HUGE HOT brand that was Jennie/Blackpink essentially lose like 80% of their spark essentially overnight because of how horribly it was mismanaged among other things.

There is clearly a disconnect between what YG feels like doing and what fans want, and at this point this disconnect is enough for me to walk away. The artist is the one that loses in the end, because my feelings for the artists are coloured by the management's atrocious handling of the brand.

Will GD who is going out from military soon can help YG from bankruptcy?

Some disbanded KPOP group who is a living legacy that you should know

It's a fierce battle and every single group out there has their "expiring date", I mean, most of the members themselves try to pursue another career outside their respective groups after their original contract with the agency expired. (Which is by the way quiet long, about 5-7 years). Yet, for a group that hasn't successfully achieve the trophy of winner, a.k.a win any chart for 2 consecutive years after they debuted, most of them will disbanded eventually before the contract expired. It's unfortunate, but with how strict the industry is under the over saturated market, it bounds to happen.
It has been the 4th generation of Kpop already, and thus before we're approaching into a new generation, let's check out some BOP from the pass generation who has been disbanded. It's a shame you don't know them, because all of them is such amazing group, and they are:

1. 2NE1
4 membered girl group is the girl crush model from YG entertainment. Consist of CL, Minzy,  Bom and Sandara, steal all international fans by their catchy and easy to listen music. Most of their song is a BOP and you should listen to all their title tracks. Try to listen on their hit track: I don't care, lonely and I am the best,
They are a girl group who break the stereotype that a Kpop girl group should be cute, a next door girl kind of type and have the same beauty standard. All the 4 members are beautiful as they are, individually unique and show cast their own appeal.

2. 2PM

Considering as a "Beast" version of the kpop boy group from JYP entertainment. All the members are so tall, handsome and  have muscular body. They aren't some pretty boy next door. Try to watch their MV Heart beat, 10 out of 10 and Come back when you hear this song. Interesting fact is that 2PM used to be JYP money maker and beat twice in term of profits. Their original leader, Jae beom left the group because of derogatory remark that he post on his own private social media, insulting south Korea as a gay country. (It isn't necessary but doesn't mean to be found in public)

3. ZEA
You might heard this name, as one of your favorite actor, yet they're actually used to be an idols, Do you know hyungsik, dongjung or Siwan. Ah, and not to forget the popular MC/comedian that often appears on many variety show, Kwang hee. Yes all of them is actually apart of Z:EA, also known as Children of Empire, is a South Korean boy group formed by Star Empire Entertainment in 2010. The group is composed of nine members: Kevin, Hwang Kwang-hee, Park Hyung-sik, Im Si-wan, Moon Jun-young, Kim Tae-heon, Jung Hee-chul, Ha Min-woo and Kim Dong-jun.

4. MBLAQ
MBLAQ (Korean: 엠블랙, Japanese: エムブラック; an acronym for Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality) is a South Korean boy group created by South Korean entertainer Rain under J. Tune Camp. The group consists of Seungho, G.O, and Mir, and formerly Lee Joon and Thunder. The group debuted on October 15, 2009, at Rain's Legend of Rainism concert. MBLAQ and Beast used to be the most promising boygroup outside the Big 3 agencies, They create unique color that giving Korean entertainment scene more diversity with a American latin influence.

Aside from the groups above, notable mention are:
5. Afterschool
6. fx
7. Infinite
8. 2AM
9. Kara
10. Wonder girls

EX IKON member, Bobby TOLD HIS DISSATISFACTION Toward YG

We already sadden by the news of our beloved IKON's leader departure from the group, BI. Yet on 3rd July, YGE not only removed his photos and profile in their YG official site, they also removed all iKON albums and the other songs which B.I produced and sing from his profile on Melon and Soribada. Now, there are just 3 album/songs that their distributor is different from YG which are Mnet songs. Also, iKON albums are removed in his Genie profile too. It's only possible if the company (yg) request this deletion.
However, the interested thing is that YG Entertainment didn't remove songs/albums from any other artists who left YGE before included PSY, Park Bom, Epik High etc. Even, Seungri has still his own songs and BIGBANG albums in his profile on music sites. Park Bom also has still her solo and 2NE1 songs in her profile.

What's interesting enough, BI, has complained about YG before, many times.
In his appearance on Korean tv show Radio Star explained: "You even have to report when you're going to the convenience store in front of the dorm. I'm 24 years old but it's like saying, 'Daddy I'm going to the store'."

Bobby also said that he doesn't own a car because iKON members aren't allowed to get driver's licenses, a restriction also in place for Winner too. The dating ban is also very much still in place for the members, to the point where they can't talk to labelmates BlackPink.

"We can't even see BlackPink right now. They wouldn't let us say hi to each other," he said. "During my trainee days, I would actively try to get with pretty ladies when I saw them but now I just think to myself, 'They're beautiful' and soon give up."

Bobby then shared, "Like today, I don't really care about what I wear but YG told me to send pictures of my outfit. I ended up wearing the final outfit that passed."

He added, "On social media, a member posted a photo of a door. He then told him to not upload things that don't have any meaning."

WHO IS THE GREATEST RAPPER IN KPOP?

Well, every each kpop group has certain role and I could say that a rapper position seems always get the interesting member in it. We might notice already that many hits kpop song contains several rapping part and it was divided to one or two members. Interesting enough, it’s good to mention that many of this awesome rappers are also can write their own lyrics (rap part).

Let’s start with the classic one, the legendary boy group from YG Entertainment, big bang. It’s obvious that yg with their signature hip hop style is the host of many good rapper. We have TOP and GD in bigbang. GD even write song for his own solo project and his group. Looking in the side, we also get another amazing female rapper like Cl from 2ne1 and Jisoo from Blackpink. Unfortunately yg lost one of his best rapper, Ikon BI, who got involved in drugs scandal and kicked out from the group. It seems there is no second chance to be given from the agency. Well, yg might have more rapper in their list, including winner song minho, and tablo from epik high.

If we want to talk about a solo rapper, we must talk about cheetah seongsenim (teacher for many produce series), from c9 entertainment, who got notice after her appearance in unpretty rapstar.

Before debuting in the music industry, Cheetah originally performed as an underground rapper on the streets after dropping out of high school. However, in July 2010 she officially debuted with the song "Stop (Money Can't Buy Me Love)" as a part of the hip-hop duo, Blacklist. With fellow member Lucy, the duo released two songs, "Nothing Lasts Forever" and "Stop". However, the group disbanded shortly afterwards. It seems cheetah get more luck to be solo.

Another some memorable mention, including rapper jessi, with her controversial figure. In 2003, Jessi successfully auditioned for Doremi Media, and moved to South Korea at age 14.She released her debut single album, Get Up, in 2005, and performed the title song, "Get Up", on the TV program Music Bank. In 2006, the hip hop group Uptown featured her in their album Testimony, replacing their original vocalist Yoon Mi-rae. Jessi's second single album, entitled "The Rebirth", was
released in January 2009. After the release, she took a break from music, and left Korea to return to America. After 5 year of hiatus she got back and enter a lot of variety show including, unpretty rapstar, immortal song, sister’s slam dunk, running man, happy together and more.

In male category, we have another popular boy group rapper, zico, who is now going solo. The other rappers into the list including zelo, 4 minutes hyuna, exo chanyeol, mamamoo monbyul, ex wonder girls yubin, sunmi, san e, amber liu, beenzino, and hoya from infinite. Surprisingly enough, they all have this cool vibe and girl crush image that let them to have a huge female fandoms. So are you one of them who like a cool type than a cutey or pretty type?

SUMMARY OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN 2019 [MID YEAR EDITION] K ENTERTAINMENT

This is a short recap to what happened in 2019. Well, let me warn you first, since this year might be the "worst" year of many kpop fans out there in the world. Especially if you're a stan of YG entertainment who actually produce a lot of good music and style. Without further ado, let's see what's happening in this 2019.
1. DRUGS and PROSTITUTION scandal, as well as all the BAD THINGS
This including all criminal act like money laundering, illegal prostitution, drugs use, drugs rape, sexual assault and assault under influence. Many idols, boy group member, and even actress already charged with this issues. If we want to start from the big one, it will be Seungri case, ex Bigbang member who decide to retire from entertainment industry after his "Burning Sun" scandal got big. In short, Seungri was officially charged with various criminal action. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Seungri faces charges related to embezzlement, destruction of evidence, violation of laws on sex trade, sexual crimes and food hygiene. Seungri is suspected of procuring prostitution for personal and business acquaintances from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan from December 2015 to January 2016. He is also suspected of buying sex himself. This case has been referred to prosecutors for further development

This "Burning sun" led to another domino effect which eventually bring down several "big names" down. The popular "troublesome chat group" who is then accused as illegally shared sexual content (hidden sex taping) and drug rape is next. Some stars who got caught are jung joon young, FT Island Jong hyun, CN BLUE Jong hyun, Roy kim, Singers Jeong Jinwood and  Kangin, ex super junior member.

This might not be enough, because after this scandal, another big name from YG entertainment popped out, and it turns out as B.I from Ikon 's leader. He was charged for drug scandal, get caught buying and using the drugs. This scandal led to his withdrawal from the group and another early retirement. This accumulative scandal let YG stock dropped and to save it, the current CEO, Yang Hyun Suk and his brother, Yang Min Suk steps down as CEO and lead director.

2. BTS become more and more approachable and unbeatable wall.
Let's not talk only about bad things. BTS were heading out on their BTS World Tour: Love Yourself jaunt this summer with dates across North America, Europe and two nights at London’s Wembley Stadium in June. All the tours are completely sold out and they even make additional concert.

According to StubHub UK, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, BTS have beaten the likes of Drake, Ariana Grande and Spice Girls in their list of the top-selling gigs of 2019. And this is not the only achievement that BTS got this year. Hardly a week goes by without a new record being made by BTS, and now the South Korean septet has done it again: the group’s August-release Love Yourself: Answer has officially become the best-selling album to ever appear on Korea’s Gaon Music Chart. With over 2.03 million sales, it is the highest amount ever recorded by Gaon since the chart began tracking South Korean music sales in 2010. According to a news release provided by BTS’s label Big Hit Entertainment, Love Yourself: Answer recorded cumulative sales of 4 million copies, the largest cumulative sales to date in Gaon Chart history, and one of the best-selling South Korean albums of all time.

3. Heart breaking break up
A sad news comes from K drama scene where our golden top couple, Song Jong Ki and Song hye kyo were reportedly issue a divorce. The marriage of the pair was to last just two years. After wedding in a high-profile ceremony in 2017, the actors released separate statements announcing the split on Thursday. The reason of the divorce is because the different in personality. It seems the forever ever after happy ending only will last in K drama land.

4. Possible IOI reunion
Another good news for Mnet produce series, after several denials from the executive, it turns out that the reunion of IOI, ex Produce 101 group who is disbanded in January 2017 might be possible after all. IOI is the first generation of Produce series, the original trend setter, consists of 11 talented personnel. According to members’ agencies and various industry sources on June 12, after extensive discussion over a long period of time, the group has agreed to get back together.

Participating in the reunion will be nine members: Kim Sejeong, Choi Yoojung, Chungha, Kim Sohye, Kyulkyung, Jung Chaeyeon, Kim Doyeon, Kang Mina, and Nayoung. According to the report, Jeon Somi and Yoo Yeonjung will not be joining. Jeon Somi turned down participation due to her upcoming solo debut, and Yoo Yeonjung also recently began promotions with WJSN

KPOP in all over the world

Kpop is no longer just for Korea. In fact, the Hallyu Wave is spreading fast around the world. Asia in particular has been hit HARD by Kpop fever. Here are some KPOP dynamic in every country, even outside South Korea:

1. Singapore
This little country has been visited by a lot of KPOP idols/acts, including all the top one in the industry, eg: BTS, Girls generation, TWICE, Big Bang, EXO, and many more.

2. Japan
Without a doubt Japan is the biggest hub for Kpop activity outside of Korea. You know it’s a big deal when artists will release their own albums and singles entirely in Japanese. Yes, sometimes this happens with albums in English, but keep in mind that English is used internationally while Japanese is really only used in Japan.  The activities of 2pm, Big Bang, and Girls’ Generation are all shinning examples of how important the Japanese market is for Kpop.

3. Hong Kong
It isn't a surprise that KPOP is big in HONG kong, just look at all the airport fancam in HK airport, and you can see how many fans were willing to wait in the airport just to see a glimpse of their favorite idols. It is so popular that even inkigayo,  music bank or MAMA has been held there.

4. Taiwan

5. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand
Most of the youtube views, twitter comment and buzz about KPOP comes from this countries. Since the late 1990s, an increasing amount of Korean popular cultural content including television dramas, movies, pop songs and their associated celebrities have gained immense popularity across East and Southeast Asian countries. News media and trade magazines have recognized the rise of Korean popular culture in Asia by dubbing it the ‘Korean wave’ (Hallyu in Korean). The Associated Press reported in March 2002: ‘Call it “kim chic”. All things Korean–from food and music to eyebrow-shaping and shoe styles–are the rage across Asia, where pop culture has long been dominated by Tokyo and Hollywood’ (Visser, 2002). According to Hollywood Reporter, ‘Korea has transformed itself from an embattled cinematic backwater into the hottest film market in Asia’ The growing popularity of Korean pop culture has more implications than simply earning foreign currency, especially considering that the country has had some diplomatic friction with its neighbours in the past decades.

BoA, who made the cover of the French Le Monde in July 2002 as an icon of cultural exchange between Korea and Japan, was invited to the two countries’ summit conference in June 2003 in Tokyo (Macintyre, 2002). In all, Koreans have heartily welcomed the fruits of the Korean wave in the midst of economic recovery from the 1997 economic crisis, and the subsequent International Monetary Fund (IMF)-directed economic restructuring, which they often refer to as ‘national humiliation’.

6. Europe
Hallyu may have been building for over two decades, but it’s only been five to ten years since k-pop entered the global scene and won hearts with its production values, addictive tunes, and slick choreography. It’s no surprise why white girls in AMWF relationships are often big fans of K-pop. There’s even large communities who support AMWF porn these days. During the early years in June 2011, Paris saw two sell-out concerts featuring flagship groups of SM like Girl’s Generation, Super Junior and SHINee. The concert drew over 14,000 fans, screaming and singing along with the Korean lyrics. This was the first large-scale K-pop concert in Europe, and it gave them the confidence to take the much-anticipated plunge in the European market according to SM Entertainment CEO, Kim Young-Min. SM Entertainment is just one of the many agencies that handle everything from recruitment of the stars to music production. K-pop success in Europe is no accident. The South Korean government invested millions of dollars into the ministry of culture, especially K-pop following the Asian financial crisis in 1998. This is popularly referred to as the South Korean government’s Soft Power push. A study released by the University of London said that South Korea has seen an estimated return of $5 for every $1 they spend on K-pop.

7. America
K-pop has had a tentative foothold in the States for a while now—six years ago, the Korean rapper Psy had an oddball hit with “Gangnam Style,” a blaring rap song about rich girls, and a magnificent excuse to do the horse-riding dance—but the genre’s hyper-stylized aesthetic can make even its most earnest bands feel like novelty acts. (The American pop market tends to appreciate a certain rawness eking out from beneath the glam—a glimpse of persevering humanity.) K-pop stars are selected, frequently as children, for their good looks, and then aggressively minded and groomed for success by teams of producers and managers. Suggestions of licentiousness or lust are handily eradicated from their songs (and usually their live performances, too), while mistakes or ad-libs are unthinkable. The choreography alone is a thing to behold. These groups are large—sometimes up to twelve members—and they move with the kind of precision otherwise witnessed only at high-level cheerleading competitions. I found it briefly disconcerting to see studied determination applied to something like club dancing—a practice that is, at least in theory, rooted in spontaneous expression, a kind of carnality—but then I set aside my scruples and immediately started trying to learn the moves so that I, too, could look awesome.

8 South Korea
Though government censorship of South Korean music has relaxed over time, it still exists, as does industry self-censorship in response to a range of controversial topics. South Korean social mores stigmatize everything from sexual references and innuendo to references to drugs and alcohol — as well as actual illicit behavior by idols — and addressing any of these subjects can cause a song to be arbitrarily banned from radio play and broadcast. Songs dealing with serious themes or thorny issues are largely off limits, queer identity is generally only addressed as subtext, and lyrics are usually scrubbed down to fluffy platitudes. Thematically, it’s often charming and innocent, bordering on adolescent.

The worst of YG Media play that is known by k netizen

Well it isn't a secret that many agency do media play to gain interest for their artists, especially if they're just debuted, from sajaegi and paid article, there are a lot of ways to generate more buzz so people might notice them. This practice might be done, not only by small agency, but big agency as well. The most common Media Playing By YG is Using Other Name (rival).
TOP 5 of the examples are:
1. Seven (YG) with BoA and Rain
•Yang Hyung Suk,"Se7en is comparable to Rain in the US market and BoA in the Japanese market." (17.04.2006)

•OSEN: Rain and Se7en-> Reasons for Being Rivals
"Rain, who drew attention with his monolids, tall height, muscular body and dance moves, also popularized sunglasses with his second album ."
"Unlike his sophisticated look, Se7en has been gathering attention for his dance skills and unseen singing ability." (14.11.2006)

2. Big Bang and TVXQ
Yang Hyun Suk, "Although it will be difficult to compete with TVXQ, Bigbang is the first teenager group debuted by YG and they are talented. Bigbang has reached 2 million views with documentary videos and been competing with TVXQ for the 1st and 2nd place in the most searched keywords." (22.08.2006)

•"He (Yang Hyun Suk) made a strong statement that Bigbang will surpass other groups including TVXQ." (03.03.2009)

•"Bigbang is still close to zero in overseas recognition, but they are at least close to TVXQ's popularity in Korea." (14.04.2009)

•[OSEN journalist Son Namwon] "Hallyu Star Bigbang is writing a history in Japan. Now that TVXQ has virtually disbanded, the group representing Korean idols in Japan is Bigbang." (30.05.2010)

•[OSEN journalist Son Namwon] "Hallyu Star Bigbang is making history in Japan... Bigbang fills the gap of TVXQ."(03.06.2010)

•[OSEN journalist Son Namwon] "Bigbang has become the strongest idol group since TVXQ's disbandment." (21.11.2010)

•"BIGBANG is the most successful Kpop group ever in Japan after TVXQ." (18.03.2016)
So Do you like or notice YG media play?

3. 2NE1 with Girls' generation (SNSD)
11.02.2014: SM, "Girls' Generation to comeback on February 19."
13.02.2014: YG, "2NE1 to comeback on February 24."

13.02.2014: YG "Girls' Generation and 2NE1 Comeback at the same time... A girl group war"
(YG then removed the tweet and the article from its official site YG-life)
14.02.2014: SM to postpone Girls' Generation comeback due to MV corruption (the album to be released on 24th, the same day as 2NE1's)

19.02.2014: YG to postpone 2NE1's comeback 3 days later (27th) to match CL's birthday (However, CL's birthday is on 26th)

4. Blackpink and BTS, Twice
• Blackpink "BTS, get out the way!" Simultaneous entry on the Billboard Main Chart (29.06.2018)

•"BTS and BLACKPINK have different methods to approach American Billboard. BTS usually uses SNS to interact with their fans. Other than the usual artists, BTS has interacted with their fans a lot. Their music also aimed to the sympathy of the same generation. They have a very stable connection to the fans and that's how the fandom grows stronger day by day. [BREAKING] THE DOWN FALL OF YG (YANG HYUN SUK)

Well, it seems YG's fortune is also not quiet good  this year. One by one, another YG artists are involved in new scandal / issues. During the years, we already know that some of YG artists like GD, TOP, Daesung and Park Bom have either drugs, drunk driving or plastic surgery scandal, you can check the news here. Yet, it seems this trend won't stop and another younger YG artists came out to have done similar mistakes just like their seniors. It becomes public secret that YG might have connection with Seoul police, thus makes them thinking that they could be invulnerable and escape the consequencies of their poor judgement. But Karma does exist, and it haunts YG.

It's all start from Seungri's case, Burning Sun, which are reported by a lot of media (except Naver, who own 100 billion won of investment in YG's stock). For a quick trivia, it's about drugs dealer, illegal prostitution, underage trafficking and sexual abuse by the VIPs. Let me underline the "drugs dealer", since many YG artists have been involved into this scandal quiet a lot. I mean if we’re looking back into history, TOP, park bom and Gdragon has been investigated for using drugs (overused propofol) or marijuana or smoking weed.

Back in 2017, T.O.P was involved in a case related to narcotics use, and the name of former trainee Han Seo-hee was exposed as the one offering an electric cigarette that contained marijuana, to the idol. Han Seo Hee is rumored as TOP ex-girlfriend. Yes, both of them probably was close with each other, looking at the closeness between the two in photos provided around internet. I doubt that ToP will still want to hang out around Han seo hee now, lol, he might regret he used to be so close with her.

After han seo hee received a sentence for being caught using marijuana, going into probation and paying a fine, Han Seo-hee started being active on social media once again and started voicing her opinions to the community. In one of her instagram live, she said that she have enough "TEA" to bring down YG, and she is actually delivered. It isn’t a bluffing at all, because now we know she is succeed to bring down YG from the managerial position, officially. It’s because the scandal with Kim  han bin, the most prominent member of ikon.

IKON's leader, Kim Han bin, was caught by police using drugs, although he is released afterward by YG strong connection with Police, it brings back again when Han Seo Hee become a whistle blower and tell media her version of what's really happened. Although Han Bin admit that he is indeed try to buy drugs, but got scared later and decide not to do it, yet after some revelation, Han bin is indeed do drugs. Yes, some fans might still in denial that their oppa didn’t use the drugs, but he has indeed tasted it.

This let his withdrawal from the group. YG tried to cut loose any connection with HAN BIN, So, on 13 June 2019, he is officially left IKON and YG entertainment. YG is once again being an ass, trying to save himself by sacrificing his talent to go downhill all alone. Han bin even got taken down from YG official website right away, erased all his contribution to IKON song, although his senior who is more problematic, is still shown there (aka Seungri). Until now, YG are still investigate and got a lot of criticism for trying to hide this scandal.

But this scandal doesn't stop there. Han Seo Hee revealed that she got threatened by Yang Hyun Suk, not to spoil anything. Han Seo Hee was previously reported as the other party, also known as informant 'A', in the KakaoTalk messages that led to B.I's drug scandal, and she personally responded to reports of the YG Entertainment head allegedly influencing her testimony about B.I back in 2016. She shown her own version of proof that she took inside YG building. She told that she took the photos as proof that YG summoned her to the agency to change her testimony about IKON han bin scandal, I don’t say that han seo hee is a saint, because she is indeed another wicked person, who have “here comes trouble” as her middle name. Other Kpop idols needs to stay away from this girl, because she could bring other people down.

Back to YG, All the denial, trying to manipulate and hide the truth, make netizens angry to YG, and make YG's stock keep going down to hill.

On 14 June, YG left a handful message and decide to officially resigned from the head producer and all other positions at YG Entertainment.

His last message:
"This is Yang Hyun Suk.
I apologize to the fans who love YGE and our label artists.
I'm also sincerely apologetic to all of the employees who silently continue to do their work despite the torrent of criticism.
I've kept my mouth closed with patience in this situation when disgraceful and humiliating words are being told as truths without discretion. However, I think it would be difficult to endure further.
I don't think I can continue to let YG, our label artists, or fans continue to be harmed because of me.
For 23 years, I dedicated half my life and everything to building YG.
Supporting the best music and the best artists was the greatest happiness for me. I've thought about how this is the only thing I can do to contribute to fans and society.
However, I'll be stepping down from all my positions and business at YG from today forwards.
I sincerely hope no further harm will come to YG as a label or to the artists I love and the fans who love them because of me.
There are currently a lot more professionals at YG who have more abilities and sense than I do. I think stepping down will be a good opportunity for them to show their abilities better. It's my honest wish that YG can stabilize quickly.
Finally, I trust that the truth will definitely be revealed after all the current headlines and facts are seen after investigation. Thank you."

Meanwhile, YG is also reportedly under obligation to pay 50 million dollar investment back from Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH). YG is planning to pay back this debt, obviously, and conduct a GREAT meeting for all YG personnel (staffs, talents, artist, etc) to discuss about YG future. Definitely they will be able to pay LVMH in the end, but losing a lot of profit in the end. Their financial might be in negative for 2019, hoping for big bang members to return from military.

Will this end all this scandal/issues and makes YG's stock rise again? Only time will tell.
